The Province is undertaking a wildfire risk reduction program on Diamond Head. The treatment will reduce the risk of wildfire to Squamish and the Ring Creek community and protect traffic along the Garibaldi Park Road. SORCA has been working with FLNRO (Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations) and the contractor with regards to the area around the lower parking lot that is a part of the project.
The project will involve thinning the forest from below and pruning large retained stems to a minimum of 3m height to reduce the likelihood of crown fire initiation; this will be followed by surface fuel removal (deadfall) to reduce the probability of ignition and surface fire spread. The areas directly around the trails will be completed by hand to avoid trail damage. While there may be some temporary visual impacts to the area, larger trees will be retained and the landscape should recover nicely in the medium term.
Once the crews move into the area around the lower parking lot, the area (see map) will have to be closed to ensure the safety of trail users and those working on the project. There may also be intermittent road closures in the area. We will keep you posted when the closures are set to begin. Please adhere to all posted signage in the area for your own safety and for those working.
We’ve attached some photos of a similar project up in Whistler.
